Music
Purpose of study
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
Aims
The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
Intent
At New Horizons Seaside Primary, we believe that a high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talents as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. Music in our school is about giving children opportunities to perform, listen to, review and evaluate different styles of music whilst simultaneously learning to sing and play musical instruments. They create and compose music with others and on their own and gain an understanding of the technical elements needed to do this.
Implementation
Our children learn music through immersive teacher-led sessions that are engaging and enjoyable. Teachers enable children to access a more diverse range of music and develop their skills in order to access the next level of musical excellence.
Through the EYFS Framework, children will be introduced to music through singing, making music and dancing, whilst also experimenting with ways of changing these concepts.
In KS1, children will be taught to use their voices creatively, listen critically to different genres of music and experiment with the different inter-related dimensions of music.
In KS2, the children will build on the knowledge they have gained in KS1. They will begin to gain an understanding of musical notation and develop their composition and performance skills. Everyone will develop an appreciation for the different genres of music and be able to describe how each period falls into history. The children will also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and sing as part of the school choir, who will perform at the O2 Young Voices in the New Year.
Impact
At New Horizons Seaside Primary, it is our intent that our music curriculum fosters a love of music, which inspires the children to continue their music journey. It is our aim to develop the children’s appreciation for music both historically and culturally. We believe that our high-quality music education engages and motivates our pupils to develop their fluency and accuracy in this subject over time.
By the end of Year 6, they will have developed the skills to be able to play, compose and improvise having used a variety of instruments. Throughout their time at Seaside, pupils should have gained an understanding of the technical elements needed to do this. Children at Seaside Primary will leave Seaside passionate about enjoying and appreciating music in a variety of ways.
